José María Alonso assumes the presidency of the Madrid International Arbitration Center

Its objective is to "consolidate" the institution as a benchmark in arbitration matters, especially among Latin American countries.

MADRID, 3 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) -

José María Alonso has taken office as president of the International Arbitration Center of Madrid (CIAM) after his election by the Plenary of the institution last October.

As Alonso himself declared at the beginning of his four-year term, his objective is to "consolidate" the institution as a benchmark in arbitration matters, especially among Latin American countries.

In addition, the new president has assured that he will seek to strengthen collaboration with all Public Administrations as it is a country project with economic and strategic implications.

"Arbitration is a fundamental tool in a globalized world. Madrid, thanks to its infrastructures, its cultural ties with Spanish-speaking countries and its great legal security, has all the requirements to position itself at the level of other world capitals of arbitration, like Paris or London", he underlined.

With more than 30 years of experience as an international arbitrator, Alonso begins his new stage at the helm of CIAM after completing his term as dean of the Madrid Bar Association. Previously, he has served as managing partner in firms such as Baker McKenzie or Garrigues. Likewise, he was a founding member and first president of the Spanish Arbitration Club.

José María Alonso thus takes over from Juan Serrada, whom he has thanked for "his great work and commitment" to the center during the months that he has held the presidency. Serrada will continue to be part of the CIAM Plenary, representing the Civil and Mercantile Court (CIMA), together with the rest of the members of the founding courts.
