Vine wins at Janus Peak, Evenepoel wears red and Mas appears

MADRID, 25 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Belgian Remco Evenepoel (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) was the great protagonist of the sixth stage of La Vuelta 2022, of 181.2 kilometers, starting in Bilbao and ending in the ascent to the Cantabrian Pico Jano, when he put on the red jersey taking off point to the rest of the favorites, although it was not accompanied by the victory that went to the Australian Jay Vine (Alpecin-Deceunick).

With ten kilometers to go, Vine knew how to choose the moment to attack the peloton, which was already highly selected, during the climb to Pico Jano, a first-class port and the scene of a first high-altitude arrival marked by the weather . The Australian was the bravest in his attack and took an advantage that they could not snatch despite the movements that took place between the favorites.

After the victory of Marc Soler (UAE), Spanish cycling was once again a major player, thanks to Enric Mas (Movistar Team), the only one capable of keeping up with Evenepoel to the finish line, showing a superlative level that put him on the podium of the general and it was a mental reinforcement for his options. The young Juan Ayuso (UAE) also showed good feelings to overcome the group of favorites and finish in fourth place, fifth overall.

The day, very marked by fog and rain, took a turn in the last of the first category ports, when the British Simon Yates (Time BikeExchange) attacked the peloton to shake up the group of favorites with 9 kilometers to go goal. By this time, Vine was already ahead, while the red jersey, worn by Rudy Molard (Groupama-FDJ), was already at stake as the Frenchman had fallen behind from the previous climb.

Yates' attack selected a group of favorites that was broken when Evenepoel began commanding it. The Belgian set a very demanding pace that was eliminating all the favorites except Enric Mas, with whom he formed a duo that would reach the finish line and that despite his attempts to cut time to the escapee, was unsuccessful. The Balearic parked his doubts and is almost half a minute behind the leader, although the most positive thing was his feelings.

Evenepoel and Mas got more than a minute ahead of Primoz Roglic and the rest of the favorites, where the most affected was Richard Carapaz (INEOS Grenadiers). The Ecuadorian was not even able to enter the group formed by Yates at first and ended up losing 2:47 to Evenepoel and 1:22 to a Roglic who this time was not with his best feelings and is more than one minute overall.

Juan Ayuso was another of the big names of the stage. The Catalan, the youngest of all the participants, left the group of favorites with a change of pace and tried to look for the stage win, but his attack could not even reach Evenepoel and Mas, although he put on a white jersey The Belgian is also leading and positioned himself in the general classification at 1:12 from the leadership.

This Friday, the race will once again have a mid-mountain profile, with the ascent to Puerto de San Glorio, first category, 65 from the finish line and which will cover 190 kilometers between Camargo, in Cantabria, and Cistierna, province of León in what which is expected to be a quieter day ahead of the general classification.
