US West Coast states agree to jointly shield abortion

MADRID, 25 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The governors of California, Washington and Oregon have issued a "multi-state commitment" called the 'West Coast Offense' on Friday to defend access to reproductive health care, in response to the Supreme Court's repeal of the right to abortion.

The plan that these three states on the west coast of the United States have announced would include access to abortion and contraceptives. The program also aims to "protect patients and physicians against efforts by other states to export their bans."

In a video posted on YouTube, California Governor Gavin Newsom; Washington's Jay Inslee; and that of Oregon, Kate Brown, have explained that these measures will take into account those women who travel to these three states in search of a safe abortion.

"We will work hard to protect your rights and your safety," Newson stressed.

For his part, Inslee has pointed to conservative states and Republican courts as being to blame for the "backsliding" on reproductive rights.

Likewise, Brown has pointed out that the repeal of the law 'Roe v. Wade' has caused more than half of the states in the country to prohibit or decisively restrict access to abortion.

There are three states -- Kentucky, Louisiana and South Dakota -- where "activation bans" automatically went into effect after the Supreme Court ruling, US television channel CNN reported.

In addition, CNN points out that ten other states have triggering bans that would be applied after an action taken by a government entity, as is the case with Missouri.

In the United States, other parts of the country are expected to meet their legislators to pass laws that restrict abortion.
