US Senators Prepare Draft to Declare Russia's Actions in Ukraine as Genocide

A group of senators from the Democratic Party and the Republican Party have signed a resolution to declare Russia's actions in Ukraine as "a genocide against the Ukrainian people," Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky detailed on Thursday.

This resolution, which is only a draft for now, has taken place after the visit that the Ukrainian first lady, Olena Zelenska, made this week to the US Congress, when she asked for the actions of the Russian troops in her country to be recognized. as genocide, as previously requested by a group of experts chaired by two advisers to the Ukrainian Presidency.

"There is no doubt that what Russia is doing in Ukraine is genocide ... If they could walk the streets of Kyev, Irpin and Hostomel, as I did last month, and listen to the stories of what they have done Russian soldiers, they would know that this is genocide. (...) It is time for the United States and the world to recognize it as such, "said Republican Senator Jim Risch.

"For five months, the world has seen the brutal, unjustified and absolutely senseless war that the dictator of Russia has unleashed against Ukraine," Democratic Senator Ben Cardin said, adding that Russia "is trying to eliminate the Ukrainian language, the Ukrainian history and Ukrainian culture", an act that he has described as genocide.

The agreement to present the resolution to the US Senate also calls on the United States, as well as NATO and the European Union, to support the Government of Ukraine in "preventing further acts of Russian genocide", and also urges "the courts and international criminal investigations to hold Russian political leaders and military personnel accountable" for the war.

The Ukrainian president, Volodimir Zelenski, has positively valued the draft signed by the US senators and has assured that Russia, "with all its terrorist attacks against the Ukrainians and our country, is burying itself."

"The resolution states that Russia's actions in Ukraine, which include forced deportation to Russia and targeted killing of Ukrainian civilians during mass atrocities, constitute genocide against the people of Ukraine," Zelensky said.
