Two warships of the United States Navy have circulated this Sunday through the Taiwan Strait, for the first time since the president of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, visited the island, which produced tensions in the region due to the repeated military exercises by China.

"The Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruisers USS Antietam (CG 54) and USS Chancellorsville (CG 62) are conducting a routine transit through the Taiwan Strait on August 28 (local time) through waters where the freedoms of navigation and overflight on the high seas in accordance with international law," the US Seventh Fleet said in a statement.

The transit of both ships has taken place through a corridor "that is beyond the territorial sea of ​​any coastal State", justifies the letter.

In this sense, Washington explains that these actions "demonstrate the United States' commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific." "The United States Army flies, sails, and operates anywhere international law allows," the statement concludes.

The US regularly sends ships to this region: in October 2018, April 2019 and December 2020, it moved two ships each time, the Japan Times reports.

The US Seventh Fleet is the largest war fleet in the North American country, being the most equipped and with the most people. The main base is in Yokosuka, Japan, although it also has units deployed in South Korea.

After Pelosi landed on the Asian island on August 2, China announced four days of military exercises in six areas surrounding the island.
