The Upper Chamber of the Russian Parliament ratifies that of Donetsk, Lugansk, Jershon and Zaporiyia

MADRID, 4 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Council of the Federation of Russia, the Upper House of Parliament, unanimously ratified on Tuesday the annexation to Russia of the Ukrainian territories of Donetsk, Lugansk, Jerson and Zaporiyia, partially occupied by Russian troops as part of the invasion unleashed on February 24th.

The decision of the senators has taken place in a plenary session held just one day after the State Duma, the Lower House, also unanimously ratified this annexation, approved last week by the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, according to the Russian news agency TASS.

The treaties ratified by the Russian Parliament set the borders of these regions and contemplate that the regions in question become republics --in the case of Donetsk and Lugansk-- and regions --in the case of Kherson and Zaporizhia--, all of them with heads of government who will receive the status of governor.

It will be precisely Putin who will appoint the governors of the four regions, which are located in eastern Ukraine, over the next 10 days. Also, regional governments will be formed in accordance with current Russian legislation.

For its part, both Ukraine and the international community have rejected Putin's announcement and have insisted that both the annexation and the referendums held days before in these occupied areas lack legitimacy under International Law.
