The UN denounces arbitrary arrests in the protests against the mobilization in Russia

MADRID, 27 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has urged the Russian authorities to respect the right of all those demonstrators who protest against the partial mobilization announced by the president, Vladimir Putin, and has demanded the release of all the detained people " arbitrarily".

The UN estimates that more than 2,300 protesters were arrested between September 21 and 27, according to information it considers "credible." "It is not clear how many are still in detention," said the High Commissioner's spokeswoman, Ravina Shamdasani.

"Detaining people only for exercising their rights to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression constitutes an arbitrary deprivation of liberty," added Shamdasani, who has urged the Putin government to comply with its international obligations.

On the other hand, the United Nations has also urged the protesters to express their ideas in a "peaceful" way, after in recent days there have been attacks against civil or military administration buildings, "including recruitment offices ".

Putin has resorted to partial mobilization to strengthen the capacity of the Armed Forces in the midst of the war in Ukraine, after the latest defeats on the ground, with the aim of enlisting a maximum of 300,000 reservists, according to estimates by his own government.
