The UN condemns the terrorist attack in Somalia and reiterates its support for peace in the country

MADRID, 21 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The United Nations has condemned the terrorist attack against the Hayat hotel in the capital of Somalia, Mogadishu, carried out by the group Al Shabaab this Friday and which has resulted in more than thirty fatalities.

The deputy spokesman for the UN Secretary General, Farhan Haq, has "strongly" condemned the terrorist attack and has shown his condolences to the families of the victims. Haq has wished that the injured, who according to preliminary reports are about 40 people, have "a speedy recovery."

Likewise, the United Nations has reiterated its "solidarity" with the Government and people of Somalia in their fight against terrorism and their march towards peace.

The Government has not yet ruled on the exact number of deceased. The last police balance is not closed, because on Saturday the police operations had not been completed.

For its part, the terrorist group, Al Shabaab, figures at 40 dead and 70 wounded after the assault on the hotel in the capital, according to the newspaper 'Somali Guardian'. The military spokesman, Abdiasis Abu Musab, reportedly added that the combatants --after repelling more than fifteen attacks by the Armed Forces-- are still alive.

In addition, the spokesman has stated that the president of Somalia is a "stupid man" for having "declared war" on Al Shaabab without being prepared.

The authorities have also reported the entry into action of the elite Haramacad forces, trained in Turkey, to end clashes that have lasted more than 24 hours.

Among the injured would be several Somali Police and Intelligence officials who were inside the hotel.

The terrorists have entrenched themselves throughout the night in the facilities, which they entered by shooting and after perpetrating several explosions in the vicinity of the central Hotel Hayat, frequented by Somali authorities.

The assault is unprecedented in recent months and would be the first of this magnitude launched by Al Shabaab in the capital since Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud took office in early June.

The EU delegation in Somalia has condemned this "cowardly attack" on Twitter and has expressed support for the authorities and citizens "in their search for peace and stability".
