The PP accuses Albares of "whitewashing" Putin for meeting with a Russian diplomat who heads the UN

MADRID, 21 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The deputy of the Popular Party Pablo Hispán has accused this Wednesday the Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, of "whitewashing" Vladimir Putin's regime for meeting with the Russian diplomat Vladímir Voronkov, deputy general secretary of the office United Nations Counter Terrorism.

In a debate in Congress with the Defense Minister, Margarita Robles, the PP deputy questioned the foreign policy of the Government of Pedro Sánchez and its "divisions" regarding the war in Ukraine and NATO.

In this context, he has denounced that Albares has met with the Russian diplomat in New York, where the United Nations General Assembly is being held. "Do you think it makes sense that while Putin announces a new step in the military escalation, Albares whitewashes the Russian regime?" asked the 'popular' parliamentarian.

The Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande Marlaska, already held a bilateral meeting with Voronkov in early September on the occasion of the United Nations World Congress on Victims of Terrorism that was held at the UN headquarters in New York.

But in addition, the Russian diplomat traveled to Spain last May to participate in a conference on human rights, civil society and the fight against terrorism organized in Malaga jointly by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation and the Office of the United Nations for the Fight against Terrorism (UNOCT).

In fact, Voronkov was in charge of opening the act together with Albares himself and also took part in the closing, this time in the company of Grande-Marlaska.

But in addition, last June the Council of Ministers approved the opening in Madrid of a delegation from the UN office led by the Russian diplomat, with the forecast that it would start operating this September.
