Telefónica will present its products for the metaverse at a major event this fall

MADRID, 12 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The director of Telefónica's Digital unit, Chema Alonso, has assured in an interview with Europa Press within the framework of the South Summit that the company will present its products and proposals for the metaverse and web3 in a major event at the end of next month of September.

"There has been a lot of noise with the metaverse, many events, many people talking. We think that the day Telefónica talks about it has to be a special day," Alonso assured, detailing that the demand from companies for these services is "extremely high" and, therefore, "you have to react to that demand".

The manager heads the innovation area of Telefónica, which has around a hundred professionals, to which should be added those located in other countries, to develop products with this technology and others such as web3, cryptocurrencies or 'tokens'. In addition, the unit has around 80 open vacancies.

For Alonso, Telefónica has to be a pioneer company in this field as a great Spanish technology company.

"This is like when social networks appeared. In the beginning, companies, some entered, others did not, and today they are all on social networks (...) Companies have to position ourselves on how we are going to want to relate and on everything at what speed. If we are going to be 'early-adopters' or are we going to be more cautious. Our vision of Telefónica is that we have to be 'early adopters'", he added. BET ON THE METAVERSE and WEB 3

In recent months, Telefónica has made its commitment to these new technologies explicit, which, in fact, led to a large part of the innovations announced by the firm at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this year.

At this event, the firm presented Yaiza Rubio, its director for the metaverse, and announced the creation of an innovation center in Madrid in alliance with Meta (Facebook's parent company).

Likewise, Alonso highlighted in the interview that Wayra has received more than 1,800 proposals from startups to participate in the thematic acceleration call launched by Telefónica's open innovation hub.

The group's president, José María Álvarez Pallete, has also alluded to the potential of the metaverse and web3 in numerous public interventions.

In fact, at the South Summit itself, he launched a message about the change he believes they will bring to the business scene by suggesting that the "winners" of this new Internet era do not have to be the same ones that dominate the digital society today.

Likewise, the firm showed at an event three weeks ago the metaverse of the Rafa Nadal Academy, one of the use cases of 3D virtual spaces that it has recently developed.

Alonso has also recognized that the fall in the price of technology shares in the United States has brought with it a "cooling" in investment in startups, especially by private capital.

In contrast to the technological ones, the director points out that Telefónica provides an investor with "a very stable business" that has been complying with the financial guide that it has given to the market for many years.

The operator has recently launched Vivo Ventures in Brazil with more than 60 million euros to invest in a startup, as well as this week it announced its first investment in the United States with WayraX shortly after having done the same in Israel.

For Alonso, one of the key points of the operator's approach is the proposal to integrate services with its business, which Telefónica always values.

"This allows us many times to make it easier to negotiate with the entrepreneurial team and that there are special conditions", explained the manager.
