Last August, Spain received the visit of about 8.8 million international tourists, which represents an increase of 69.7% compared to the figure registered in the same month of 2021, according to data published this Tuesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE). With this, in the first eight months of the year, the number of international visitors was close to 48.1 million.

These tourists spent 11,258 million euros in our country, which represents an increase of 90.6% compared to the same month in 2021, when it was 5,907 million.

With this new rebound in August, both the arrival of international tourists and the spending they make in Spain have already accumulated fourteen consecutive months of year-on-year increases after the break due to the coronavirus.

The Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, Reyes Maroto, expressed her satisfaction with the data that she described as "extraordinary" and highlighted that the tourism sector is the one that is contributing the most to job creation and the increase in membership in Spain.

In an interview on RTVE's La Hora de la 1, the minister stated that the tourism sector is still one of the most dynamic sectors of the economy and that "despite the uncertainty of autumn" it will continue to create wealth and redistribute it throughout the territory " thereby contributing to territorial cohesion".

"It is in our hands to give confidence so that both national and international travelers choose us to continue enjoying their vacations. The outlook for 2023 is positive," said the minister, insisting on the need to invest to improve the tourist experience. of our visitors.

In the first eight months of 2022, the number of tourists who visited Spain increased by 220.2% and was close to 48.1 million. In the same period of 2021, almost 15.1 million arrived, a period still affected by the pandemic and travel restrictions.

The United Kingdom was the main country of residence for tourists who visited us, with more than 1.8 million tourists, which represents 20.8% of the total and an increase of 157.1% compared to August 2021. France and Germany were the following countries with the most tourists who visited Spain. France contributes 1.6 million (27.1% more in annual rate) and Germany 1.1 million (62.8% more).

The increase in tourists continues to lead to a significant increase in spending in our country, exceeding 11,258 million, which means practically doubling the figure recorded the previous year.

The average expenditure per tourist stood at 1,276 euros, with an annual increase of 12.3%. For its part, the average daily expenditure grew by 20.5%, to 162 euros.

Data from the statistical institute also shows that the average duration of international tourist trips is 7.9 days, which is 0.5 days less than in August 2021

During the first eight months of 2022, the total expenditure of international tourists increased by 247.5% compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching 58,895 million euros.
