Spain ratifies in Washington the accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO, the last recognition procedure

MADRID, 7 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Spanish ambassador to the United States, Santiago Cabanas, presented this Wednesday at the State Department in Washington the instruments of ratification of Spain that definitively approve the accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO, the last step that was missing for full recognition .

This has been reported by the Embassy of Spain in the US through a message on the institution's Twitter profile. "We are firmly committed to NATO and to European and Euro-Atlantic security, and welcome this important step in strengthening the Alliance," she posted.

The Senate gave the definitive approval to the accession of Sweden and Finland to NATO on September 21, the date on which the ratification process ended with only one vote against, since none of the parties that voted ' no' in Congress it had representation in the Upper House and neither did Podemos, which abstained.

Thus, once all the members of the Alliance and the candidates have approved these protocols, the next step --which was carried out this Wednesday-- is to deposit the documents with the United States Government, specifically with the Department of Condition. Until all the documents are delivered, the aspiring countries will not be able to become a member of NATO.

It was last May when NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg received Sweden and Finland's request to join the military organization, after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
