Sánchez vindicates the taxes and criticizes those who say "that the money is better in the pockets of the citizens"

THE GROVE (PONTEVEDRA), 1 Oct. (EUROPE PRESS) -

The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has claimed this Saturday the importance of paying taxes to maintain the Welfare State, which has to be paid for by "all citizens" in proportion to their income, and has criticized the "wizards" who they bring "failed recipes" and that "proclaim that money is better in the pocket of citizens".

This was stated in his speech at the La Toja Forum, held in the Pontevedra town of O Grove, where he participated through a video recorded after canceling his visit to Galicia for having tested positive for Covid-19.

Sánchez focused a large part of his speech, which lasted more than half an hour, on underlining the importance of taxes in maintaining the public services that citizens can currently enjoy.

Therefore, it has focused on the search for "fair taxation" to promote and maintain quality public services. "The question we have to ask ourselves is what Welfare State we want? Do we strengthen or weaken the Welfare State? Do we strengthen public services or weaken them?", he indicated, adding that if Spain wants to resemble the Nordic countries, with more complete public services, it is important to pay taxes.

"We cannot have a Welfare State like the Nordic countries with a collection similar to less economically developed countries", he lamented, for which he has claimed that "we must be consistent" and "provide income to the Welfare State".

Despite this, he has spoken of the tax reform promoted by the Government and has valued the reduction in taxes that it will mean for the lowest incomes. According to the president of the central Executive, taxes must be progressive, so that those who have more also contribute to a greater extent.

To support his speech, Sánchez wondered if Spaniards would see it as normal for a person to fall into poverty because they could not afford to pay for a hip operation or that families had to take out a mortgage to pay for their children's university, in the event that the Administration did not do it.

For this reason, he has criticized the "sorcerers" who bring "failed recipes" and who "proclaim that money is better in the pockets of citizens." In this sense, he has claimed that public services are "efficient and profitable", despite the fact that he has recognized that "no one likes to pay taxes", although they are necessary to maintain the Welfare State.
