MADRID, 14 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, this Friday together with the German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, and the Prime Minister of Portugal, António Costa, claimed the “great importance” of “accelerating” the “construction of energy interconnectors” within the Union Union through the Midcat gas pipeline to guarantee “security of supply” in the EU.

Sánchez has traveled to Berlin where he has held a meeting with his counterparts, a week before the summit of EU leaders in Brussels to decide on intervention measures in the energy market in the framework of which the extension of the “Iberian exception” to the rest is being studied of the EU, while Spain and Portugal also claim to recover the Midcat gas pipeline project despite France’s reservations.

In a joint statement from the governments of the three countries, they have recognized “the importance of diversifying energy sources to guarantee the security of Europe’s supply”.

In this context, they have highlighted the “great importance of accelerating the construction of energy interconnectors” within the EU, including gas corridors suitable for transporting renewable hydrogen and, likewise, they have agreed to “carry out a joint follow-up on this issue”.

During the meeting, the three leaders agreed on the importance of “providing common and urgent European responses” to “the challenges arising from high energy prices”. For this reason, they have pointed out that the ‘EU Green Deal’ is “essential to combat climate change and accelerate the transition to a CO2-free economy before 2050”.

That would lead, they explained, to reducing dependence on fossil fuels through the expansion of renewable energies, which “also contributes decisively to our security,” according to the joint statement. Likewise, the three heads of government have reaffirmed their unwavering support for Ukraine “for as long as necessary” and have focused their dialogue on the current security situation in Europe in the face of “Russia’s war of aggression”.
