Senators agree to modify the US electoral law to shield the results of the presidential elections

MADRID, 21 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) -

A group of senators from the Democratic Party and the Republican Party reached an agreement on Wednesday to make it more difficult to annul a certified presidential election, thus responding to the pressure campaign of former US President Donald Trump, who asked to annul the results. of the 2020 presidential election.

The proposal, which still needs to be approved by both chambers of the United States Congress, will require 60 votes in the Senate -- at least 10 votes from senators from the Republican Party -- to go ahead, CNN has reported.

This bill would modify the Electoral Recount Law that dates back to 1887 in the country, emphasizing that the country's vice president only has a ceremonial role in supervising the certification of electoral results.

Former President Trump tried to create confusion by claiming that his Vice President, Mike Pence, had the right to overturn election results during the session of Congress to certify the Electoral College votes.

The agreement is the culmination of months of negotiations led by Republican Senator Susan Collins and Democratic Senator Joe Manchin, the aforementioned network has reported.
