Scariolo wins his fourth gold and becomes the second most successful coach in Eurobasket history

MADRID, 18 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Spanish coach Sergio Scariolo has once again written his name with golden letters in the history of European basketball, winning his fourth gold in a Eurobasket, a figure that makes him the second coach in history with the greatest record in this type of competition , second only to the legendary Aleksandr Gomelski, who was champion six times with the Soviet Union.

Sergio Scariolo, who had already recognized before the final that this medal was one of the most special of the seven he already had with Spain, has managed to become European champion again, beating one of the great favorites, France.

It is his fifth medal in a Eurobasket that he won in 2009, 2011, 2015 and where he had won bronze in the last edition, in 2017. In fact, Spain has only won one European gold with him as coach.

The Italian has won five gold medals in ten major tournaments with Spain, a figure that is even greater if medals are taken into account, since with him as coach, the national team has climbed onto the podium eight times. In addition, to this triumph is added the merit of having managed to win with two different generations.

Scariolo already surpasses Dusan Ivkovic, with whom he was tied for three golds, and is now only behind Gomelski. The dimension of the Spanish coach is such that no other coach has managed to win more than one gold in the entire 21st century. With him on the bench, Spain has only been left out of medals at the 2010 World Cup and the 2020 Olympics.
