'Saras' Barça begins its third assault on the Euroleague

The culé squad makes its debut against Olympiacos in the big goal of the season

MADRID, 6 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Barça kicks off the Euroleague season this Friday against Olympiacos at the Palau Blaugrana, a new assault on the European throne that they haven't occupied since 2010 in the third year with Sarunas Jasikevicius on the bench and a challenge that is beginning to become an obsession.

The Barça team has been renewed in an even surprising way, forced by the stampede of players and the disaster in the last weeks of competition last season. Barça was the favorite for everything in the month of May but suffered a severe setback, with the emotional aggravation of conceding it against Real Madrid.

The eternal rival, who by contrast seemed in crisis, knocked him down in the semifinals of the Euroleague and later also dethroned him in the Endesa League. The unquestionable Jasikevicius became doubtful for fans and even players, with the departure of many of them such as Calathes, Davies, Hayes or Smits.

The Lithuanian coach has no plans to change his book and will again tighten the screws on his team in search of the third European Cup for the club. In his debut on the culé bench he was left at the gates in the final against Efes and the setback against Madrid adds a hunger that can turn into anxiety.

However, the season will put everyone in their place in search of a 'Final Four' for which the favorites have been reinforced. At Barça, Tomas Satoransky, Nikola Kalinic, Jan Vesely, Mike Tobey and Da Silva are the new important faces, while they wait for Mirotic with an Achilles tendon injury.

The season began with the defeat in the Super Cup against Real Madrid and another one in the Endesa League debut against Gran Canaria. Last weekend the azulgrana team beat Baskonia, but again Jasikevicius has to put together a team with new faces although, yes, wicker to be on top and make the third time the charm.

The first stone in the long European campaign will be the Olympiacos of former Barça players Sasha Vezenkov and Kostas Papanikolau, as well as coach Georgios Bartzokas. The Greek team was one of the surprises last year, reaching the 'Final Four', and for this year it has been reinforced with important men such as Isaiah Canaan, Tarik Black, Alec Peters or Joel Bolomboy.
