Ribera hopes that the EU countries respond "firmly and united" to the possible Russian "sabotage" of gas pipelines

SEVILLA, 29 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Third Vice President of the Government and Minister for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, Teresa Ribera, appealed this Thursday for the countries of the European Union (EU) to respond "firmly and united" to what "clearly looks like a terrible sabotage" of Russian origin on the 'Nord Stream 1' and 'Nord Stream 2' gas pipelines.

In an interview on Canal Sur Televisión, collected by Europa Press, the Vice President and Minister for the Ecological Transition spoke on the eve of the Energy Council meeting this Friday, which will bring together the Energy Ministers of the Twenty-seven countries members of the EU with the purpose of examining the emergency measures of the European Commission to deal with the high prices of energy in the community market.

This meeting comes after, during the afternoon of last Monday, the Danish authorities detected a gas leak in one of the sections of the 'Nord Stream 2' gas pipeline on the Danish island of Bornholm. Hours later, the submarine gas pipeline 'Nord Stream 1' detected a drop in the pressure of the gas from Russia sent to Germany and that affects the two lines of the pipeline.

Teresa Ribera has confirmed that among the issues to be discussed at said meeting of the Energy Council, "this week, at the request of some Member States, how we respond to what clearly looks like a terrible sabotage, a provocation, online with what had been an increase in the degree of tension coming from Russia burning the gas that it did not send us through the gas pipeline during the summer, threatening to use the Ukrainian nuclear power plant for purposes of fear for the Ukrainian population and the European Union " usually.

"And now all of a sudden this, which is apparently more linked to sabotage than to any other type of accident", as Teresa Ribera warned about what happened with the gas pipelines, adding that "it is impossible for this type of tube to have this type of failures, and minus three, four simultaneously in less than 48 hours".

The Minister for the Ecological Transition has warned that, as a result of these incidents, "a lot of gas is being released with a very high potential for increasing global warming", for which "an environmental drama is taking place for the climate and living species that are in that marine ecosystem".

He has also pointed out that this "has a difficult technical management", because "it is not that simple to stop that leak or recover the pipes", and above all this he has considered that, on the part of the EU, "we must as ever respond firmly, united and be clear about who Europe should position itself against and with respect to whom it should guarantee its protection and solidarity capacity", while pointing out that "it seems to him that this is going to be the end of the extraordinarily technical debate, but above all political and important for the future of the European project" that will be elucidated in the next few hours.

But, on the other hand, the third vice-president has also pointed out that the meeting of European energy ministers will also see "an extremely interesting debate", because those responsible must "answer how to improve the electricity market and not be polluted by the price of gas".

"We have to answer the question of whether it is important to put a maximum price on natural gas for all imports from different countries or only on Russian gas; how do we advance in this taxation of large corporations, and how do we work on the measures that allow us to be more efficient in our electricity consumption, in the same way that in July we adopted measures to save on gas consumption", according to Vice President Ribera.
