Ribera believes that the MidCat debate "cannot be closed" only because of Macron's rejection

MADRID, 6 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Third Vice President and Minister of Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera, assured this Tuesday that the debate on MidCat, the gas pipeline between Spain and France through the Pyrenees, "cannot be closed exclusively by the pronouncement of a single country", in reference to the words of this Monday by the French president, Emmanuel Macron, who decisively rejected the project.

In an interview on Onda Cero collected by Europa Press, Ribera has predicted that the debate on the completion of MidCat will be addressed at the extraordinary meeting of energy ministers of the European Union (EU) that will take place this Friday.

"It is convenient to put all the cards on the table about how many things it can contribute (the MidCat) to be able to cover safely not only this winter, but also the next one", the minister stressed.

In addition, he has insisted that the debate on this infrastructure must be carried out in European terms and not as a matter of bilateral interest between Spain and France. "The question is what the rest of the partners think," she pointed out.

Macron assured yesterday at a press conference after a videoconference with the German chancellor, Olaf Scholz, that he considers that the two current gas pipelines (Irun and Larrau-Calahorra) are sufficient for the future.

Asked about this, the head of Ecological Transition has recognized that it is possible to send more gas through current infrastructures. "In fact, one of the measures is to add a compressor to send more gas," she asserted.

However, Ribera has emphasized that in the current situation, in which countries are trying to complete their gas storage and in which there are doubts about the duration of Russian President Vladimir Putin's energy "blackmail", it is necessary evaluate this infrastructure and also take it into account as part of the future Iberian green hydrogen corridor.

On the other hand, he has reaffirmed that it is "extremely" unlikely that Spain will run out of gas supply this winter despite the fact that Russia has closed its exports of this raw material to Europe.
