Real Madrid lifts the Super Cup with character

The whites recovered in the final stretch of a duel that they won (89-83) after extra time, with a less consistent Barça at the end

MADRID, 25 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Real Madrid beat Barça (89-83) in the Spanish Super Cup, played in Seville, in a very close duel, which even required an extension, in which the Whites were more consistent in the decisive stretch and after put themselves together after a good start by the azulgranas, who were able to dry up the madridista attack, although not enough.

The Whites lift their fifth consecutive Super Cup, the first title of the post-Laso era, after a match in which Barça was better in the first half with a very committed defense. However, the talent of Tavares -24 points and a PIR of 40 to be 'MVP' of the tournament- and Llull, with three decisive three-pointers in a row in the third quarter, prevailed over Jasikevicius' proposal along with teamwork.

The match began with the teams somewhat erratic and with some difficulty in hitting the basket. It was Deck who opened the scoring for Real Madrid with his characteristic physical superiority, although later he would be more disappeared.

Barça responded with a very connected Sanli, scoring easy twos and threes, even blocking twice with only three minutes of play. Equality reigned from the beginning and until minute 8 the first basket for the azulgranas did not come from a player other than Sanli, who supported the Catalan team -11 points in five minutes-, by Jokubaitis.

At the last minute of the first quarter it was 13-13 on the scoreboard, but Poirier 'lowered' it to put the reigning champions ahead with a great basket that lifted the flag. This action 'stinged' Barça and Vesely starred in another video game play to tie momentarily and make it 15-15 when the end of the first set was nearing.

The fourth ended with maximum equality (15-15), with Sanli being the protagonist in the azulgranas and the whites going from more to less. In the second quarter, Real Madrid's attack continued somewhat static, partly due to the little participation of Deck. Only two points in the first four minutes of this second set for the white team, making too many mistakes in clear plays under the rim, and somewhat diminished physically.

The failures were condemning Real Madrid, who only added one triple in eight attempts and in 15 minutes had only scored 17 points, after reaching a hundred in the semifinal match against Betis. Also due to the merit of the azulgranas and their 2-3, which wiped out the whites.

After two minutes without annotation by either team, Kalinic put Barça ahead after an error by Vesely. With three minutes remaining in the second quarter, Kuric, who came on for Higgins for this match, widened the lead for Barça, who went on to win by 10 (27-37) taking advantage of Real Madrid's moments of doubt, very thick in attack and with little fluency. Finally, the break was reached with a 29-37 scoreline that showed Barça's good defensive performance against a Real Madrid without solutions and taking refuge on the rebound (24).

After 12 of 20 (60 percent) in shots from two by Barça and 10 of 28 (35 percent) by Madrid, also with 1 of 9 in triples, the third quarter began with a Catalan team that felt very easy and He made it 29-41 in the first minute, until Musa added the first white points after the break.

Sanli continued to do his thing and already had 17 points with 7 of 8 shooting from two. At 36-45, Real Madrid was still collapsed in attack, somewhat thick and disconnected and with a much fresher Barça in ball movement. Laprovittola's creativity appeared at the key moment to assist Vesely who scored and caused the 2 1, although he missed the free kick.

In the final stretch of the fourth, Real Madrid took refuge in the talent of Musa, who scored four points in a row (40-47) to reconnect the Whites based on talent. This improved Mateo's team, who endorsed a 10-0 run thanks to two consecutive triples by Llull, who reappeared when his team needed him most. Real Madrid took the lead (50-49), with Barça disconnected. The Balearic base was the new white hero with three triples in three minutes, and with Tavares blocking the way to the Barça ring.

Already in the final quarter, Real Madrid increased the intensity and went five up, but Barça did not throw in the towel and responded with a favorable partial 3-10 to get ahead again (58-59). The triples by Tobey and Laprovittola were key to maintaining the Barça lead (63-65) with less than four minutes remaining.

Real Madrid reached the penultimate possession two points ahead (71-69), but Laprovittola's vision reappeared to assist Tobey, who equalized with a powerful mate. The whites had the last one, but they managed their possession poorly and Deck missed three. The game went into overtime.

In it, Real Madrid was superior with a great Tavares, protagonist scoring in attack and blocking in defense. The Whites believed in themselves to culminate their reaction in the final stretch and close the match 89-83.
