Quartararo and his tight leadership face the final stretch on the return to Thailand

In Moto3, Izan Guevara wants to take a step towards the title, while in Moto2, Augusto Fernández seeks to break away from Ai Ogura

MADRID, 29 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The French rider Fabio Quartararo (Yamaha), who showed some doubts in the last Japanese Grand Prix, will once again examine his tight lead in Thailand, scene of the seventeenth round of the World Championship and which is held at the Chang International Circuit, in Burinam, with a 'Pecco' Bagnaia (Ducati), at 18 points, and an Aleix Espargaró (Aprilia), at 25, wanting 'revenge' after the slowdown in his particular race for hunting down the leader in Motegi.

Burinam will once again host a Motorcycling event after the three-year break -since 2019- due to the coronavirus pandemic. In a circuit that has only been run twice in the entire history of the World Championship, and in both -2018 and 2019- Marc Márquez (Repsol Honda) won in two magnificent duels, first against Andrea Dovizioso and then against the current leader Fabio Quartararo, who gave him the title that year.

However, the Spanish rider is experiencing a very different situation, although his physical condition has improved in the last week. The man from Cervera was very close to the podium in Motegi -he was fourth-, without feeling pain for the first time in a long time, as he himself recognized. In addition, on the Japanese track, home of Honda, he conquered pole position almost 1,100 days later, so the return of the eighth champion seems to be developing slowly, but steadily.

And it is that the one from Cervera, who together with pilots like the other Ducati can be a judge in the fight for the title, returns to one of the circuits that he is best at and that he "likes". However, the Spaniard finds it difficult to repeat the "solid" weekend in Motegi in Burinam, although he is confident that the rain will equalize forces.

This Thai Grand Prix, which will predictably have the rain as the protagonist, will allow us to see how the contenders for the title are doing in this final stretch of the World Cup, with only four races remaining. Quartararo was able to widen the gap on him and get oil out at Motegi after a race in which he went through everything. The one from Nice finished in a discreet and frustrating eighth place, although, considering the fate of the rest of the contenders for the MotoGP crown, it was not as bad a result as it seems and he was able to get the most out of it.

Thus, the Frenchman (219 points) increased his advantage over Bagnaia (201), after the Italian, who was ambitious, suffered a crash on the last lap, throwing all the work of the weekend to the ground and adding his first 'zero' after the break, breaking the good streak that he had chained, with five podiums in a row, with four wins and one second place. Therefore, the Ducati rider will want to make up for his mistake to keep the fight for the World Cup red hot.

The biggest contender suffered in the wet at Motegi, conditions that he will also find on the Thai track, now forced to take risks to continue squeezing a Quartararo who could get even closer to the title if the mistakes of his rivals continue and he keeps a cool head. Bagnaia already knows what it's like to win in Burinam, when he climbed to the top of the podium in 2018 in Moto2.

Aleix Espargaró (194), the third in contention, also missed a great opportunity to get second and follow in the footsteps of the Frenchman, but a mapping problem prevented him from doing so. The Catalan had to change bikes and start from the 'pitlane', and he could only finish sixteenth, out of the points.

The Thai track will surely be the last opportunity for the Italian Enea Bastianini (Ducati) to try to get into the final fight, although he needs to win and his rivals fail because he is 49 points behind Quartararo.

In the Moto2 category, Augusto Fernández (Kalex) is still ahead in the World Championship with 234 points, only two above the Japanese Ai Ogura (Kalex), who won in Japan to continue his rise and continue to put pressure on the Spanish.

Thus, after the '0' of Arón Canet (Kalex) and Celestino Vietti (Kalex), it seems that the battle will be between the two and promises strong emotions in Buriram, where the rider from Madrid was fourth on his last visit three years ago, and the final stretch of the calendar.

In Moto3, on the other hand, nothing seems to stop Izan Guevara (GasGas), who is already heading into the final stretch of the World Championship like a shot at the title. The Spaniard, who had never raced in Motegi, signed his fifth victory of the year to make his leadership more solid.

He arrives in Thailand with a 45-point advantage over his teammate Sergio García Dols, after two consecutive wins. Thus, getting back into the box would allow him to caress the championship, after Gel Castellón was left off the podium and with Dennis Foggia (Honda) at 63 units, already practically ruled out.
