Putin simplifies procedures for residents of Jerson and Zaporiyia to apply for Russian nationality

MADRID, 25 May. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday signed a decree simplifying Russian citizenship application procedures for residents in the Ukrainian regions of Jerson and Zaporiyia, taken by Russian forces as part of the offensive launched on the 24th of February.

The document includes amendments to an April 2019 document that reduced the obstacles for residents of the self-proclaimed republics of Donetsk and Lugansk to apply for citizenship, according to the Russian news agency Interfax.

On February 21, Putin signed a decree recognizing the independence of these republics, located in the Donbas region (east) and shaken by an armed conflict since 2014. Just three days later, he ordered the invasion of Ukraine, a conflict that has been going on for more than three months active.

Hours before the Russian president's decision, the deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee for Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) Affairs, Viktor Vodolatski, had indicated that "70 percent" of the residents in the occupied areas of Ukraine by the Russian forces want to obtain Russian passports.

"In the liberated territories, where people already live a normal life (...) people have expressed the desire (...) to obtain Russian passports", he pointed out, before indicating that this is extensible to Kherson and Zaporizhia , as reported by the Russian news agency TASS.

"Our law is flexible, adaptable, regardless of the special military operation," he stressed. "I think that within the framework of federal law enforcement there will be no problems for people from these territories to obtain citizenship," Vodolatski argued.
