Planas regrets the "psychological blow" to table olives by the US, although "in practice the situation remains the same"

SEVILLA, 30 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, has considered this Friday "an unfortunate incident" that the American Justice has ruled in favor of the United States Department of Commerce maintaining the tariffs on Spanish black olives, although he has assured that this "will be overcome", since, although it is "a new psychological blow, in practice, the situation remains the same".

In an interview on Canal Sur Radio, collected by Europa Press, the minister has put this new resolution that affects the Spanish table olive sector into context. Thus, he has explained that the World Trade Organization (WTO) won the open conflict over the tariffs imposed by the US, which acquiesced and, therefore, must modify its internal legislation, but "it has time to do so".

"It has been at this time when the American court has issued this resolution agreeing with the US", which it has considered "a little strange", but, in practice, the situation remains the same until the US reviews its internal legislation, period in which the North American country has been convinced is going to carry out. "He has committed himself and we believe in it," he assured.

In line with this issue, he stated that "the important thing" is that "our producers can recover ground in the North American market" and, in this sense, the central Executive will hold a meeting next week with the European Union to continue "pressing and settle this issue that has been in circulation for four years".

This ruling, which was issued on September 23, is the third issued by the US Court of International Trade (CIT) and is already the final one in this instance. This tariff, which has its origin in the subsidies of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) to farmers and represents 15 points of the total initial tariff of 35%.
