Petro estimates that he has "revived Pinochet" for the victory of the 'rejection' of the Chilean Constitution

The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, has reacted on Sunday night to the rejection of the new Constitution of Chile and has estimated that the result, with a large majority on the part of the detractors of the new Magna Carta elaborated, supposes a return of the former dictator of the country, Augusto Pinochet.

"Pinochet revived", Petro has published on his Twitter account, in a message in which he cited that the rejection of the new Constitution was imposed.

"Only if the democratic and social forces unite will it be possible to leave behind a past that stains all of Latin America and open the democratic alamedas," he later expressed.

Unlike Petro, his predecessor, former Colombian President Iván Duque, has celebrated the result. "He spoke to the Chilean people on a beautiful democratic day," he stated in his account on the same social network.

"Good sense triumphed over ideological impositions that would forever fracture a society that has achieved important social and economic achievements," added Duque.

The vote that took place this Sunday, September 4, in Chile had the objective of approving a new Constitution that would replace the one drawn up by Pinochet, a text that is currently in force. However, with 99.95 of the tables counted, the 'rejection' has obtained 61.86 percent of the votes --almost 7.9 million--, while the 'approval' has obtained 38.14 percent of the ballots --little more than 4.8 million--.

In 2020, Chileans were in favor of developing a new constitution, but the results of this plebiscite show that they are not satisfied with the one designed.

Among the political parties in Chile, whether they are from the left or the right, there is a political consensus that a new Magna Carta must be carried out, which must be approved by the citizens.
