New PP initiative for Congress to reaffirm the commitment to expand military spending to 2%

MADRID, 12 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The PP has registered a new initiative in Congress for the Government to reaffirm the commitment reached with NATO to expand military spending to 2% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), an issue that divides the coalition Executive and that the 'popular ' are determined to repeatedly submit to a vote in the Lower House.

In fact, in their new non-law proposal, which they have presented for debate in the Defense Commission, the first opposition party recalls that already last July, during the Debate on the State of the Nation, the Plenary approved your motion for a resolution on this matter.

That text, before which United We Can voted against, urged the Executive to "promote a scenario of defense budget increase to achieve the goal of 2% of GDP" in order to "modernize and improve" the military capabilities of the Armed Forces and also to strengthen the Defense Technological and Industrial Base, "favoring economic growth and the creation of highly qualified employment".

On September 29, the Plenary returned to rule on this matter in a PP motion that again served to highlight the internal differences of the Government also on the increase in military support for Ukraine. However, on that occasion the PSOE and United We Can did coincide in voting against the Budgets for 2023 including raising military spending to 2%.

In its new non-law proposal, collected by Europa Press, the PP assumes that the commitment reached by the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, is to reach that 2% before 2029 and, for this reason, it proposes that Congress urge the Executive to establish a commitment to progressively increase on an annual basis.

Thus, the 'popular' will try to get the Defense Commission to summon the Executive to "prepare a multi-year program for sustained growth" of the Defense budget so that it reaches 2% "in the shortest period of time possible" --including already a first term in the Budgets for 2023-- and "in no case later than 2029".
