NATO speaks of "sabotage" of the Nord Stream and defends protecting critical infrastructure of allies

BRUSELAS, 28 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) -

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg referred to the gas leaks in the Nord Stream gas pipeline on Wednesday as an episode of "sabotage", in line with the responses of the European Union and the United States that point to an act deliberate.

In a conversation with the Danish Defense Minister, Morten Bodskov, the political chief of NATO has discussed the incidents in the Baltic Sea, which he has branded as "sabotage" against Denmark, although he has avoided attributing it to a third country.

"We have addressed the protection of critical infrastructure in NATO countries," he indicated in a message on social networks.

Denmark sounded the alarm on Tuesday after detecting a gas leak in one of the sections of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline on the Danish island of Bornholm. Hours later, the Nord Stream 1 submarine gas pipeline detected a drop in the pressure of the gas from Russia sent to Germany and that affects the two lines of the pipeline.

Precisely the need to shield infrastructure, industry and public institutions against foreign interference is one of the issues that NATO has been emphasizing since the coronavirus pandemic.

This is what Stoltenberg has been defending in recent years, in an attempt to have a more global vision of the allies' resistance capacity, as demonstrated by the adaptation of NATO's reference requirements for civil planning in the face of future crises. At all times, the Atlantic Alliance has been open to helping strengthen the preparation of its members in the face of the possible situation of "vulnerability" of some allies.
