Nadal advances to Roland Garros final as Zverev withdraws

The German sprained his ankle in the second set of an epic battle that went on for three hours

The Spaniard will seek his 14th title in Paris against Ruud or Cilic

MADRID, 3 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Spanish tennis player Rafa Nadal advanced this Friday to his fourteenth Roland Garros final, where he will seek the same number of titles, with a bittersweet ticket since his rival in the semifinals, the German Alexander Zverev, retired in the second set due to injury.

The battle was being epic at the Philippe Chatrier, with more than three hours and a 7-6(8), 6-6 scoreline in favor of the Spanish. Reaching a new 'tie-break', Zverev ran in defense of a ball and twisted his ankle in gravity, silencing the Parisian central defender who until then had been in continuous ecstasy.

The German left several cries of pain and retired in a wheelchair, to return on crutches, accompanied by Nadal, and confirm his withdrawal before the public. The Spanish tennis player will seek his 14th French Open and the 22nd 'Grand Slam' against the winner of the second semifinal between the Norwegian Casper Ruud and the Croatian Marin Cilic.
