Montero reiterates the Government's commitment to fiscal consolidation and to the Brussels objectives

MADRID, 25 May. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Minister of Finance and Civil Service, María Jesús Montero, reiterated this Wednesday the Government's commitment to fiscal consolidation and to the Brussels objectives.

During the control session to the Government and in response to a question from the PP deputy Víctor Valentín, Montero highlighted that the Government of Pedro Sánchez is the one that has cut the public deficit the most in history, with a reduction of 3.31 points in 2021 compared to 2020.

In addition, Montero reminded Valentín that it was the current Executive that took Spain out of the European Commission's excessive deficit procedure "after the PP governments systematically kept it above 3%".

The PP deputy, for his part, has accused the minister of "trusting" the solution of the budgetary imbalances to the collection, "fired at the expense of the Spaniards who are having a worse time."

"If he got out of the official car and refueled at 2 euros per liter of fuel or made the purchase, he would feel in his flesh the failure of his policies and the need to apply the tax cuts proposed by the PP", Valentin stressed.

Montero has replied that if the PP is in favor of lowering taxes, he does not understand why he voted against the tax reduction on electricity or the fuel bonus.

"They do it because they follow the maxim that the worse Spain does, the better the PP does and that the Spaniards are not going to forgive at the polls," added Montero, who pointed out that, with a war at the gates of Europe, "the least a party that aspires to govern can do is pitch in".

Valentín, for his part, has affirmed that the Government does not lower taxes "out of arrogance" and has criticized that it does not reduce unproductive spending having "margin" for it.

"The independent institutions of this country are telling him that if he does not reduce the structural deficit, the debt will soon reach 140%. The Bank of Spain told him last week that he has to reduce budget imbalances," Valentin snapped.

The next elections in Andalusia have slipped into the exchange of accusations between Montero and Valentín.

The minister has asked the PP to be "brave" and "commit" not to agree in Andalusia "with an extreme right-wing party that maintains a "civil war" discourse, while Valentín has urged the Government "not to agree with the heirs of ETA".

Montero has assured that the PP cannot commit not to govern with Vox "because it does not mind handing over Spain to that political force."
