Meloni already looks to October 13 as the first milestone towards the formation of his government

MADRID, 26 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The far-right leader Giorgia Meloni already has her sights set on October 13, the first milestone on the calendar that will take her to the Chigi Palace, seat of the Italian government, barring catastrophe. That day the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate meet for the first time and the election of the presidency of both will be the first acid test of the apparently solid coalition that will support Meloni.

The Chamber is made up of 400 deputies and in the absence of official confirmation of the results, Meloni's party, Brothers of Italy, will be the first political force, although it will need support to reach a majority. That's where the allies of the Italian conservative sector come into play: the far-right Liga, the traditional right of Fuerza Italia and the centrists of Nosotros Moderados, who would add between 227 and 257 deputies.

In the campaign, the four formations have boasted of their harmony, but the election of the presidency of the Chamber of Deputies will be the first great litmus test. The Senate, with 200 elected senators and 6 for life, will also meet "no later than the twentieth day" after the vote, according to Italian law.

Once the leaders of Parliament have been elected, the consultations of the head of state, Sergio Mattarella, will begin, who will summon the leaders of the parliamentary groups, the leaders of the coalitions, the former presidents of the chambers and the former presidents of the Republic to the Palace of the Quirinal before commissioning the formation of government.

Once elected, Meloni will have to present a list of ministers and they will be able to swear their positions in the Quirinal to formally constitute the Council of Ministers. However, within ten days they must submit to a vote of confidence from both chambers, a step that, once passed, will convert the Executive into a full-fledged Government.

This whole process is well studied in Italy, a country in which a government has rarely managed to complete a legislature since the Second World War. The average constitution of a government is 67 days, but when the majority is as clear as in this case, the times are reduced and it could end in a month.
