Mapfre installs 4,700 solar panels at its headquarters to achieve 40% electricity self-sufficiency per year

The initiative, developed together with Iberdrola, will prevent the emission of 700 tons of CO2 per year

MADRID, 28 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Mapfre insurance company has installed a total of 4,700 state-of-the-art panels on rooftops, car parks, facades and the floor of the four buildings at its headquarters in Majadahonda (Madrid) with which it will generate 40% electricity self-sufficiency per year.

To do this, Mapfre has relied on Iberdrola to design a comprehensive custom solution, which occupies an area of some 5,700 square meters, and which is added to the 700 panels installed by Mapfre in collaboration with Iberdrola in 2020.

The new facility will generate 3.1 megawatts per hour (MWh) per year, which will allow the insurer to self-supply 40% of its annual electricity consumption at its headquarters in Madrid, with production peaks of 95% of total demand . With this, it intends to avoid the emission into the atmosphere of 740 tons of CO2 per year, as reported by the company in a statement.

Specifically, the green energy generated by the solar panels will serve to supply a large part of the electricity consumption necessary for the daily operation of the offices, including the 48 free 22-kilowatt recharging points that Mapfre offers to employees who use electric or hybrid cars pluggable.

Mapfre and Iberdrola plan to extend the scope of this project to install photovoltaic self-consumption systems in another 25 large properties of the insurer in Spain during the year 2023. In addition, both companies are studying expanding the initiative to other countries such as Germany and Brazil, where they have a presence

This project is part of the initiative

In this sense, all of the energy that Mapfre currently acquires in Spain comes from 100% renewable sources. In addition, the company promotes the circular economy, and supports the transition to a low-carbon economy through subscription and investment, making itself available to its customers and the people who depend on its activity so that they also converge in that direction.

Mapfre has recently joined the Net-Zero Alliance to achieve greenhouse gas emission neutrality by 2050 in its insurance and reinsurance underwriting portfolios to fight climate change. Thanks to this, in 2021, the insurer achieved carbon neutrality in Spain and Portugal and obtained Zero Waste certification, which has allowed it to recycle 351 tons of waste in one year.

On the other hand, the company develops sustainable products, such as Gama Cambio, a new Mapfre insurance for electric and hybrid vehicles, and carries out initiatives in its work centers to save energy, water and paper, encourage work in mobility and reduce business trips.
