Llop responds to Feijóo about stopping appointments in the TC in exchange for negotiating the CGPJ: There is no room for "blackmail"

MADRID, 30 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Minister of Justice, Pilar Llop, has categorically rejected the possibility that the Government renounce to appoint two magistrates of the Constitutional Court (TC) in exchange for the PP sitting down to negotiate the renewal of the General Council of the Judiciary ( CGPJ). She has highlighted that there is no room for "blackmail" in compliance with the Constitution.

"We have to tell the PP that the laws are complied with, the Constitution is complied with," he asserted at the press conference after the Council of Ministers, and then added that the president of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo "makes thousands of excuses to not comply" and thus not renew the governing body of the judges that has been in office since 2018.

In line, Llop has pointed out that if the proposal made by the 'popular' now is to sit down to negotiate in exchange for the appointment of the magistrates of the TC being withdrawn, he replies that the Government complies with the current law "and that That law has to be followed."

"The blockade and denialism that has been going on for four years, more than four years, of lack of renewal (...) is costing the Spaniards money, it directly affects the pockets of the Spaniards," he said, to quantify the expense in reinforcements in the Supreme Court at 1.3 million, a figure that, he says, amounts to 12.5 million in the justice system.

For this reason, he has insisted that it is essential that the CGPJ be renewed "without blackmail and without conditions." "What does it feel like --Feijóo-- to say which are the candidates, (...) person from the judicial career who have been aspiring to be members for four years," he pointed out.

In this sense, he stressed that this blockade "generates a very negative impact" on the justice system because it affects institutional prestige, and he said that both the European Commissioner and the Vice President of the European Commission have already asked the PP to renew advice.

In line, he has asserted that the only proposal that the PP can make is renewal, because a political force that "breaks" the Constitution "is not politically legitimate" to propose alternatives in the field of Justice. "Let the CGPJ renew and then we can talk about what you want," she added.

On the other hand, after being asked when the Council of Ministers will proceed to appoint its two magistrates for the TC, Llop has indicated that he cannot anticipate anything new in this regard, but has added that "the logical thing" is that the appointment by the Government and the one that corresponds to the CGPJ go "in rhythm".

In this regard, he recalled that the TC "is not the Judiciary, it is not within the title relating to the Judiciary in the Constitution, and it is an organ of a political nature because it is appointed by the three powers of the State."

In addition, Llop has insisted on the idea that the Socialist Group in Congress has acted with "democratic responsibility" by reforming the law to return to the CGPJ the power to appoint the two Constitutional magistrates.
