Lesmes believes that Reynders will help "unblock" the renewal of the CGPJ but reiterates that if there is no progress he will resign

He believes that it should not be "difficult" for the Government and the PP to agree to reform, but he stresses that for this "there is no urgency"

MADRID, 30 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The president of the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ), Carlos Lesmes, expressed his confidence this Friday that the visit that the EU Justice Commissioner, Didier Reynders, has made to Spain will help "unblock" the renewal of the Council, something that has underlined that it is "urgent", while considering that it should not be "difficult" for the Government and PP to agree to reform the system of electing members, although it has emphasized that for this "there is no urgency".

"I believe that the impulse of the European institutions is important, that it can help us to get out of this stuck situation in which we find ourselves", said Lesmes, in statements to the press, after meeting this Friday with Reynders at the headquarters of the Supreme Court (TS).

Thus, he has not hesitated to affirm that we are now better than before the arrival of the Belgian politician. "Because the positions were very bitter and I think that his visit helps a certain discontent, to make the positions of both parties more flexible," he added.

Lesmes has indicated that "there is agreement that the urgency is to renew the Council", even speaking of "extraordinary urgency". However, he has warned that, if there is no progress in this matter, he will carry out the threat to resign in "weeks" that he verbalized during the opening of the judicial year, on September 7.

Asked directly if he will resign next week, when a month is up, he replied that "it depends on what happens these days." "If we remain in exactly the same situation, my stay will be meaningless," he has launched her.

As for the possible reform of the election system for the members of the CGPJ, he has stated that, in his opinion, "in this it is not difficult to find oneself in the two parties." "Let's open a procedure and we are going to reflect on where we have to go, to the extent that there is no urgency either," he urged.

Lesmes has explained that "there is no urgency" in reforming because what was really modified would not be applied for another five years, when it would be time to renew the Council again --assuming that a new one would now be agreed upon--.

In addition, he has emphasized the importance of thinking carefully about the reform because, although European standards require that the majority of the members of the CGPJ be appointed by the judges themselves, he has warned of the "risks" that the "ideological blocs" that there are in the political parties are also transferred to the Council through the judicial associations.

"It does not have to be as simple (as) that the judges choose. It can be done in many ways to prevent blocks from being ideologically transferred through the judicial associations because we would be exactly in the same position. In other words, we would have to find other ways ", Has fixed.
