The leader of the French far-right National Grouping party, Marine Le Pen, stressed on Monday that the Italian population "has chosen a patriotic and sovereignist government", after the victory of the right in the elections held on Sunday, with the far-right Brothers of Italy Giorgia Meloni in front.

"The Italian people have decided to take their destiny back into their own hands by electing a patriotic and sovereignist government. Bravo to Giorgia Meloni and Matteo Salvini - leader of the also far-right League - for having resisted the threat of an anti-democratic European Union (EU). and arrogant in obtaining this great victory," he said in a message on his account on the social network Twitter.

Meloni's party, founded in 2012 and with its roots in the Italian Social Movement (MSI), founded by followers of the fascist dictator Benito Mussolini, has won 26.5 percent of the vote, according to data from more than 90 percent of the count. The League has obtained nine percent and Forza Italia, headed by former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, has obtained eight percent of the support.

In second place was Enrico Letta's Democratic Party, with 19.4 percent; while in third place is the 5 Star Movement, led by Giuseppe Conte, with 14.8 percent of the ballots. In this way, the right-wing bloc made up of the parties of Meloni, Salvini and Berlusconi would achieve an absolute majority in both chambers.
