Johnson warns of 'long war' in Ukraine

MADRID, 19 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The president of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson, has warned this Saturday that the war in Ukraine could have a prolonged duration and has urged Western countries to continue supporting the Ukrainian Army for the duration of the Russian invasion.

"I note with regret that we must prepare for a protracted war, as Putin has embarked on a military campaign of exhaustion, trying to wipe out Ukrainian forces with ever-increasing force," the British president said in a published op-ed. in the newspaper 'The Times'.

Johnson has assured that time "is now the vital factor" in the war, and that everything will depend on the ability of Ukraine to strengthen its defensive capacity while Russia insists on the attack.

"Everything will depend on whether Ukraine can strengthen its defense capacity of its territory faster than Russia can renew its attack capacity. Our task is to buy time on the Ukraine side," the UK prime minister added.

"Imagine for a moment that Vladimir Putin's visions of glory came true. Suppose he were free to keep all the areas of Ukraine now controlled by Russian forces...Would this bring peace? Would the world be safer? Would you be safer?" Johnson insisted.

The British Prime Minister has stressed that in the hypothetical case that Ukraine lost the war, "Putin would not stop", and has assured that his victory would mean the greatest aggression in Europe since the Second World War.
