Irene Paredes: "They didn't feel like reviewing the goal because we're in England"

The captain of the Spanish team, Irene Paredes, described England's first goal in the quarterfinals of the Women's Euro Cup as a "very clear" foul, an action that "decanted" the match and that the referees "did not want, see, neither whistle, nor review" when playing against the hosts, who advanced to the next round by winning in extra time (2-1).

"I can't jump because he hits me with his elbow on the neck, a clear foul that he doesn't want to whistle or review, and that decides the game and a new one begins. We've been good, the end is punctual moments, but they put a goal that they don't want to review because you're in England, it's complicated," he said in statements to TVE, collected by Europa Press.

"Then they score a great goal for you and the game ends with a corner in our favor. It is true that we have had more and we have not scored them. But there are details that diminish you and that has been one of them despite the fact that we have made a great match," Paredes lamented.

The captain was involved in the controversial action of the match, receiving an elbow from Russo, who prevented the defense from heading the ball before it reached Toone to make it 1-1 in the 86th minute. "It's a very clear foul , as a result of that comes the goal. I can't jump because he hits me with his elbow on the neck," he clarified.

"We have a team for this and much more, but once again we are out. It is very hard, when the team can give and go further, leaving in the quarterfinals is hard," added the central defender, who admitted that he had not yet spoken with his companions.

"It's a duel that has to happen, it's normal for people to be hurt. With time it will go away, there's a lot of talent and we want to do things well," he said.
