Germany’s trade balance recorded a deficit of 1,000 million euros last May, which is its first monthly negative balance since 1991, according to data published by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis).

German exports in May totaled 125.8 billion euros, 0.5% less than the previous month, although 11.7% more than a year earlier, while imports reached 126.7 billion, 2.7% more than in April and 27.8% more than a year before.

In the case of the European Union (EU), German exports decreased by 2.8% monthly, to 67,500 million, including 46,800 million in sales to the countries of the euro zone, 2.8% less. In turn, German imports from its EU partners reached 61.8 billion, 2.5% more than in April, with 42.5 billion in purchases from the euro zone, 1.6% more.

As for non-EU countries, German exports in May totaled 58.3 billion euros, 2.3% more than the previous month, while imports increased by 2.9%, to 65 billion.

Regarding trade relations with Russia, the German Office indicated that exports reached 1,000 million euros in May, 29.4% more than in April, while compared to May 2021 they fell by 54.6%. Likewise, German imports from Russia fell by 9.8% monthly, to 3,300 million.
