Free or discounted Renfe season tickets: what they consist of, how they are requested and what routes are included

As of today, August 24, you can request discounted and free Renfe passes approved as part of the anti-crisis measures due to high energy prices. There are several types of subscriptions and discounts with different characteristics and uses.

The Commuter Recurring Subscription

The first of these new passes is the "recurring pass" for Cercanías, which can be requested from last August 8 on the Renfe website and mobile applications. From today it can be purchased through the app (with a QR code) and also at ticket offices and station machines.

For your request, you will have to pay 10 euros as a deposit, which will be returned to the buyer as long as you make a minimum of 16 trips on Cercanías during the period of validity of the subscription. It is recommended to pay the deposit with a bank card to expedite its return.

The Cercanías "recurring subscription" can be used in the Cercanías service in which it was purchased and allows unlimited trips to and from these centers: in Madrid, Málaga, Murcia-Alicante, Valencia and Zaragoza, the code can be used QR of the app to use it. In the centers of Bilbao, San Sebastián, Seville, Valencia, Cádiz, Asturias, Santander and in the centers with Rodalies service in Catalonia, a "Renfe" card must be used.

Medium Distance Recurring Subscription

In the case of the Medium Distance service, the subscription will be free upon payment of a deposit of 20 euros, which will be returned as long as a minimum of 16 trips are made on this service and on the route requested by the client. It can be obtained through the Renfe app, self-service machines, ticket offices and the web.

Subscriptions from Before

For the Avant train service, the current subscriptions are maintained, with a 50% discount for recurring users. Those who have a subscription prior to this discount period can request a refund for the amount of said discount on trips made during the discount period.

For the Avant Card Plus 30-50 subscription, three months of validity and 60 days for its use are established from the date of travel of the first formalization. In the case of the Avant Card Plus 10 Normal and Student, 30 days are set for the first formalization and 20 days for its use from said formalization. For the Avant Card Plus 10-45, the period of validity and use will be 45 days from the date of purchase.

Recurring AVE subscriptions

You can also buy this new pass for High Speed ​​trains. It will be marketed with a 50% discount on the Plus 10 Normal Avant Card rate. It will be valid for 10 trips. Its period of use will be 30 days for the first formalization and 20 days for its use from the date of travel of said procedure.

It is valid for 10 round trips, between the requested origin and destination, and with 13 authorized routes. Madrid-Palencia, Madrid-Zamora, León-Valladolid, León-Palencia, Burgos-Madrid, Burgos-Valladolid, Ourense-Zamora, Palencia-Valladolid, Huesca-Zaragoza, León-Segovia, Segovia-Zamora, Palencia-Segovia, Medina del Campo-Zamora are the relationships for which this new ticket can be purchased.

All these passes can be requested, and from today purchased, through the app or the Renfe website, in the self-service services of the stations and at the ticket office.

Recurring commuters on Cercanías, Rodalies and Media Distancia Convencional who purchase the new free subscription will be able to travel on these trains from 1 September until the end of the year. In the case of the new high-speed passes and Avant passes, the period of use is one more month, until January 31, 2023, and they can also be purchased between now and December 31, 2022.

In addition, the Minister of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, Raquel Sánchez, stated this Wednesday that the Government is willing to extend the free tickets beyond December 31 if, when the time comes, it is considered useful and necessary.
