Finland closes its borders to Russian tourists from this Friday

MADRID, 29 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Government of Finland has approved the closure of the borders to Russian tourists, in the midst of a migratory escalation derived from the partial mobilization announced on September 21 by the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin.

Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto confirmed the new measures to the media on Thursday, which will be in force "until further notice." Helsinki justifies the closure based on an exception that contemplates these limits in case international relations may be in danger, reports the YLE chain.

However, the Finnish authorities have established a battery of exceptions, for cases of visits to relatives, studies or work trips, among others. The Government has also clarified that freight traffic will not be limited.

With these measures, the authorities aim to cut border traffic in half. The European border agency (Frontex) warned on Tuesday that more than 42,000 people had entered Finland from Russia between September 19 and 25.

The Finnish Border Guard even proposed this week the construction of a fence to improve security and the Government promised to study the proposal.
