Feijóo calls for an energy saving plan in Spain to lower "unnecessary consumption" and agreed with municipalities

He denounces Sánchez's "improvisation" in energy matters and defends coal plants or extending the life of nuclear ones

VALENCIA, 21 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has defended this Thursday that it is "essential" that Spain promote a "responsible and serious" energy saving plan to lower "unnecessary consumption" and that it be agreed with the municipalities to reduce, for example , night lighting.

"The plans that set limits on the consumption of air conditioning in summer and heating in winter seem fine to me. We must reduce unnecessary consumption and agree with the city councils on savings in night lighting in the municipalities with the aim of being prepared for eventualities cuts or power cuts" as a result of the war in Ukraine.

This has been transferred, in statements to the media in Valencia, in reference to the recommendation of the European Commission to reduce gas consumption by 15% and the refusal of the Government to support it exposed by the Minister for the Ecological Transition, Teresa Riverbank.

Feijóo has criticized that the position of the Government is unknown beyond this statement by Ribera, although he has clarified that Spain is more prepared than other countries for possible supply cuts because it has gas generation plants.

He has also criticized the "constant improvisation" of the Government, which "a few days ago proposed accelerating the ecological transition with less consumption of gas and hydrocarbons and now wants not to cut gas." "This is not very serious," she warned.

Other proposals that he has reiterated is to use all possible energy sources, including coal-fired power plants as in Germany and Poland, or to maintain and extend the useful life of nuclear power plants as "backup energy" in the event of eventual supply cuts.

The head of the 'popular' has demanded prioritizing workplaces --to protect employment--, the consumption of hospitals and centers for the elderly, as well as that of homes, and has insisted that the Government should not "improvise ".

"What we have done with Algeria is nonsense: Italy has assured the Algerian supply and we are increasing purchases of Russian gas. This type of energy policy that is mixed with foreign policy generates enormous uneasiness," he warned.
