Echenique suspects Lesmes and hopes that his threat to resign is not a strategy to avoid the renewal of the TC

Claims again that one way to overcome the blockade of the CGPJ is to change the majority system, which is perfectly constitutional

MADRID, 8 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The spokesman for United We Can in Congress, Pablo Echenique, has questioned the moment chosen by the president of the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) by threatening his resignation with a view to forcing the renewal of the judicial body, which should have occurred much earlier, and hopes that it is not a "strategy" to delay the changes that must be undertaken in the Constitutional Court.

"That (the possibility of resignation of Lesmes) arrives at a time when the CGPJ has to appoint two magistrates, I hope it is not a strategy to block the renewal of the court of guarantees," he added at a press conference.

With that, he was referring to the appointment of two magistrates of the Constitutional Court (TC) that correspond to the governing body of the judges, by virtue of the legal reform that returned to the CGPJ its ability to elect jurists while in office, but only in the guarantee court.

Today the members are meeting on this matter, but it is most likely that the meeting will serve to set the procedure without reaching an agreement on the applicants, which would make it difficult to meet the deadline of September 13 established by said reform. .

The leader of the purple formation has shown his suspicions about Lesmes's intentions, stating that most of his career in high positions of responsibility has been with the PP, in addition to demanding that the members with an expired mandate try to block the renewal of the CT.

Regarding the defense of United We Can to reform the system of majorities to unblock the replacements in the CGPJ and asked about the lack of support from the PSOE for these plans, Echenique has replied that "he does not reveal anything" if he emphasizes that his coalition partner alleges that said modification would not have the support of the EU.

In this regard, the spokesman for the confederal group has replied that Brussels was also against capping energy generation prices, alluding to gas, and that they are now asking for it.

Therefore, Echenique has claimed that his proposal to enable the option of allowing the election of members by absolute majority, in case three-fifths of the chamber (210 deputies) do not meet, is "perfectly compatible with the Constitution."

In addition, he has stated that these guarantees of parliamentary agreement would be reinforced by including the requirement that half of the groups in the chamber also meet.

All this would allow, in his opinion, to overcome the "blocking minority" of the PP, would guarantee the "ideological plurality" of the CGPJ and would maintain the condition of requiring a qualified majority, when faced with the fact that the investiture of the President of the Government in the Cortes takes place by simple majority.
