MADRID, 14 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Venezuelan Interior Minister, Remigio Ceballos, has updated the official death toll from the flood in the town of Las Tejerías to 50, after the passage of storm ‘Julia’.

“So far, officially, we have 50 people who unfortunately lost their lives and have been handed over to their families,” Ceballos told the TeleSur channel.

Ceballos has also stated that new bodies can be found over the days, so the figure he has provided is provisional for now.

The minister has also assured that the search and rescue work “continues without rest”, before highlighting the work of the Bolivarian National Armed Forces. With this, he has detailed that the region has 3,200 men working and 30 machines, as well as the forensic canine brigade.

On October 8, after the formation of a trough in the north of Venezuela, the overflow of five streams was reported due to heavy rainfall in the area, which caused a large avalanche in Las Tejerías, according to TeleSur.

The intense rain began on Saturday afternoon and lasted until late at night, causing landslides, rocks and trees that devastated 21 sectors of this town, one of the poorest in the state of Aragua.
