Daniel Ricciardo will leave McLaren at the end of this season

MADRID, 24 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The McLaren team confirmed this Wednesday that it has mutually agreed with the Australian driver Daniel Ricciardo to terminate his contract for the year 2023 and that he will end his stage at the end of this season.

Ricciardo was chosen by the British team to replace the Spanish Carlos Sainz in 2021, who headed for Ferrari, and in his year and a half he has not given the desired performance despite winning the Italian Grand Prix last year .

In his second campaign, on the other hand, he has only scored points in four Grand Prix, and will leave his seat free, with his compatriot Oscar Piastri, if he solves his controversy with Alpine, indicated by the media as the favorite to be the new partner of the Englishman Lando Norris.

"It has been a privilege to be part of the McLaren Racing family for the past two seasons, but after several months of discussions with Zak Brown and Andreas Seidl we have decided to terminate my contract with the team early and mutually agree to part ways at the end of this season. Ricciardo commented in the McLaren statement.

The Australian indicated that he will announce his "future plans in due course" and assured that he felt "proud of the effort and work" during his time in Woking. "I will give it my all on and off the track as we enjoy the rest of the season together. I have never been more motivated to compete and be a part of a sport I love so much and I look forward to what comes next," he added.

For his part, Andreas Seidl, team manager, thanked the pilot "for his dedication and contribution" during his stay. "Despite the challenges, he always had a fighting spirit and positivity and helped the whole team move forward," he noted.

"We will never forget that memorable win at Monza, which was a huge boost for the whole team. We still have an important battle in the Constructors' Championship ahead of us for the rest of the season and we look forward to fighting with Daniel and Lando."

Finally, Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren Racing, stressed that Ricciardo had been "a great addition", although he made it clear that it was "no secret" that they hoped "to be able to achieve more together". "But seeing him on the top step of the podium as a McLaren driver was the highlight. We wish him well for the future and hope we enjoy the rest of the season together," he said.
