'Checo' Pérez is crowned in the chaos of Monaco against Sainz

Fernando Alonso finishes seventh

MADRID, 29 May. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Mexican driver Sergio Pérez (Red Bull) has won this Sunday in the chaotic race of the Monaco Grand Prix, the seventh round of the Formula 1 World Championship, ahead of the Spanish Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) and the Dutchman Max Verstappen (Red Bull) , with Saturday's 'poleman', Monegasque Charles Leclerc (Ferrari), staying just outside the podium, while Fernando Alonso (Alpine) finished seventh.

After more than an hour of delay due to rain, two red flags and numerous safety cars, everything was decided in the last minutes of the event, with the two Ferraris and the two Red Bulls grouped together. 'Checo', despite the 'graining' of his right front tire, withstood the pressure to win his third victory in the 'Great Circus'.

For his part, Fernando Alonso (Alpine), winner in Monaco in 2006 and 2007, finished seventh, behind the British George Russell (Mercedes) and his teammate Esteban Ocon (Alpine), in a test in which he resisted the attacks of the seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes).

A few timid drops forced the start of the race in the Principality to be delayed a quarter of an hour, which started with the formation lap behind the safety car. However, the rain started to get heavier and the red flag added uncertainty to the Grand Prix.

An hour later, the test resumed with the 'safety car' with all the participants wearing extreme rain tires, which did not prevent Canadian Nicholas Latifi (Williams) from crashing into the protections at the Loews curve and his compatriot Lance Stroll (Aston Martin) suffered a puncture in one of its rear wheels.

On the third lap through the streets of Monte Carlo, the safety car left the track and Leclerc defended his privileged position in a fast start in which Sainz remained second, with the two Red Bulls awaiting any failure on a circuit in which overtaking is almost impossible.

The Monegasque, in front of his public, seemed to escape at the pace of a fast lap, and while the track dried up, the pilots entered garages to bet on intermediate tires. The first of the candidates for victory to go through the pits was 'Checo', and two laps later Leclerc did so.

Sainz, on the other hand, extended the 'stint' with the extreme rain tires to go directly to the 'slick', something that materialized on lap 24 in a double stop for the 'Scuderia'. Red Bull copied the strategy and Pérez rose to the first position.

The spectacular accident of the German Mick Schumacher (Haas) on lap 29 returned the 'safety car' to the track, but finally he had to wave the red flag again to change the protections. Time began to count down as Ferrari returned to action on hard and Red Bull on medium.

Pérez, provisional leader, and Sainz exchanged fast laps waiting for the Mexican to begin to notice symptoms of 'graining', something that happened in the final stretch and that allowed the two 'Cavallino Rampante' and the two single-seaters to group together. the energy brand.

However, the Mexican withstood the pressure to sign his first victory of the course and the third in Formula 1. Third place allows Verstappen to consolidate his leadership in the championship with a nine-point advantage over Leclerc.
