Bitter triumph of Pogacar in the rampón de Peyragudes

The Slovenian adds his third victory in this edition, but the leader Vingegaard does not give up a meter on the second day in the Pyrenees

MADRID, 20 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Slovenian runner Tadej Pogacar, of the UAE Team Emirates, won the sprint this Wednesday in the seventeenth stage of the Tour de France, disputed between Saint Gaudens and Peyragudes over 130 kilometers, ahead of the yellow jersey, the Danish Jonas Vingegaard, who did not gave a meter.

Tadej Pogacar added his third stage win in this edition -and the ninth in his record- of the Tour, after the selection made by his teammate, the American Brandon McNulty, third at 32 seconds, in Val Louron and his final arreón in the 'rampon' of 340 meters at 17 percent before the finish line.

The Spanish Enric Mas (Movistar Team) was twelfth, at 3:44, on the second day in the Pyrenees and returned to tenth place in the general classification, 16:35 behind Jonas Vingegaard who was a shadow of Pogacar in the eve of the climb to Hautacam, the last 'bullet', aside from the time trial, to cut the 2:18 -subtracted 4 seconds for the victory- of delay of the leader of the UAE.

With Marc Soler sick and getting out of control in the Pyrenean debut and Rafal Majka injured and not taking the start this Wednesday, the Dane Mikkel Bjerg and Brandon McNulty made the selection of the UAE in the bunch of favorites in the last two ports of the stage, Val Louron and Peyragudes.

So ruthless was the rhythm imposed by Bjerg and McNulty that only Vingegaard and the British veteran Geraint Thomas held out for the battle that was predicted in Val Louron, a mythical setting before the battles between Miguel Indurain and Claudio 'El Diablo' Chiappucci who rescued this Tour without the ties of before.

Thomas also relented before Pogacar accelerated to within 200 meters of the Val Louron banner, with Vingegaard stapled to his wheel on the banner and the twisty descent towards the foothills of Peyragudes, a pass that the duo of yellow hopefuls climbed on the wheel of the combative McNulty.

The battle was again postponed to other ports and another time. Pogacar could not let go of a solid Vingegaard in the final port, who only gave in in the last 300-meter ramp, but who came within a meter of the Slovenian to further consolidate his leadership on the way to Paris.

This Thursday the eighteenth stage will be held, between Lourdes and Hautacam, of 143.5 kilometers, with the ascent to two special category ports, Col d'Aubisque and the end of Hautacam, and in between the climb to Col de Spandelles, the last mountainous stage of the heroic fight between the two-time champion Pogacar and the aspiring Jonas.
