An explosion causes the death of three blue helmets in the Central African Republic

The Secretary General of the United Nations announced on Tuesday the death of three blue helmets in the Central African Republic after the vehicle in which they were traveling crashed into an explosive device on Monday night.

The spokesman for the Secretary General of the United Nations, Stéphane Dujarric, has detailed that the three dead came from Bangladesh and belonged to the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA).

"Sadly, we have sad news from our peacekeeping colleagues in the Central African Republic. MINUSCA informs us that three Bangladeshi peacekeepers have died after sustaining serious injuries when their vehicle collided with an artifact explosive overnight," Dujarric detailed at a press conference.

A fourth MINUSCA member has been seriously injured and is receiving medical treatment in the town of Bouar, where the wounded had been evacuated, the UN has learned.

The incident occurred when troops were patrolling on the Koui-Bohong axis, about five kilometers from the mission's temporary base in Uham-Pendé prefecture.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has conveyed his "deepest condolences" to the families of peacekeepers and to the people and government of Bangladesh.

"We wish, of course, that the injured member of the peacekeeping forces recover quickly and fully," Guterres said, in the words of his spokesman.
