The NGO Amnesty International has identified at least 28 indiscriminate bombings launched by Russia on the Ukrainian city of Kharkov between February 28 and April 30, of which seven were carried out with cluster munitions, the use of which is widely prohibited in international conventions. for the protection of civilians.

In a new report released on Monday, Amnesty accuses Russian forces of causing "widespread death and destruction" through relentless shelling of residential neighborhoods and using "repeatedly" 9N210 and 9N235 cluster munitions, as well as scatter mines over the city, located in northeastern Ukraine, just 30 kilometers from the Russian border.

Amnesty also accuses Russia of using unguided rockets, such as Grads and Uragans, to bomb residential areas of the city, even though they are "inherently inaccurate" and produce wide-spread destructive effects.

The director of the medical department of the Kharkov regional military administration has estimated, in his balance to Amnesty, that at least 606 civilians have died and another 1,248 have been injured since the beginning of the attacks against the city on the same day that the invasion began. Russia from the Ukraine, on February 24.

The NGO, for its part, has investigated a series of Russian attacks that have caused "multiple victims in large areas", particularly in the north and east of the city: a total of 41 bombings in which at least 62 people died and at least 196 were injured, with the testimonies of 160 residents of the city, including survivors of the attacks.

Amnesty, for example, denounces that at least nine civilians were killed and more than 35 were injured by a Russian attack with cluster bombs in and around Myru Street in the Industrialni neighborhood.

Amnesty researchers have also reported that at least six people were killed and 15 injured on the morning of March 24, when cluster munitions hit a car park near the Akademika Pavlova metro station, where hundreds of people were queuing for help. humanitarian.

"The people of Kharkov have faced relentless indiscriminate shelling in recent months, killing and injuring hundreds of civilians," said Amnesty International's General Adviser on Crisis Response, Donatella Rovera.

"People have died in their homes and on the streets, in parks and cemeteries, while queuing for humanitarian aid or buying food or medicine," he added.

"The repeated use of banned cluster munitions is outrageous, and yet another example of the utter disregard for civilian lives. The Russian forces responsible for these horrific attacks must be held accountable for their actions and the victims and their families must receive full reparation." , he concludes.
