Albares asks to maintain European unity in the supply of weapons to Ukraine after the German blockade on the shipment of tanks

BRUSSELS, 23 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, defended on Monday maintaining European unity in the supply of weapons to Ukraine, after Germany last Friday postponed the decision on sending battle tanks to the meeting at Ramstein airbase.

The meeting, which brought together a coalition of more than 40 countries that support kyiv, helped many countries announce more military aid to Ukraine but did not lift the blockade on the supply of German-made 'Leopard' tanks.

"Spain is going to try to maintain unity and that we take the measures that Ukraine needs at this time to face the great challenge it faces," Albares said, without wanting to enter into the Berlin decision and insisting that the unity of the Europeans is "the best tool" that the European Union has to face the "enormous challenge" represented by the Russian aggression against Ukraine.

In this sense, he pointed out that the Government is committed to contributing at all times what is best for Ukraine in order, in this way, to ensure that peace returns to the country.

After last week he stated that the possibility of Spain sending its 'Leopard' tanks "is not on the table", Albares has not specified what the situation is after the appointment in Ramstein that precisely monopolized the debate on the suitability of sending tanks to kyiv, in the midst of international pressure on Germany to give the green light, as a manufacturer, to the re-export of these systems.
