Albares asks Iran to respect the right to demonstrate and clarify the circumstances of the death of Mahsa Amini

MADRID, 26 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, has asked Iran on Monday to respect the population's right to demonstrate and to clarify the circumstances surrounding the death of the young Mahsa Amini, which have caused a wave of protests against the Iranian authorities in the last week.

In an informative breakfast organized by Europa Press, Albares referred first to the statement issued on Sunday by the High Representative for Foreign Policy of the EU, Josep Borrell, on behalf of the Twenty-seven, condemning the death of the young after being arrested by the Iranian morality police for improperly wearing the veil.

And then he repeated the same message, urging the Iranian authorities to "respect the right to demonstrate" of the population and rejecting "the disproportionate use of force" against those who demonstrate. The protests have resulted in several dozen deaths in different cities of the country.

"What we want is for the circumstances of this woman's death to be clarified," added the minister, and once this happens, those responsible for it are held accountable for their actions.

In its statement, the EU maintains that "the widespread and disproportionate use of force against non-violent protesters is unjustifiable and unacceptable", calls for the "immediate end to the violent repression of protests and guarantees access to the Internet and the free flow of information".

Likewise, it requests "an adequate investigation of the death of Mahsa Amini" and that those responsible for his death be held accountable and warns that it is considering "all options" with a view to the next Foreign Affairs Council, the forum that brings together the ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Union, in response to the actions of the Iranian security forces and to Amini's own death.
