A US court dismisses a multimillion-dollar lawsuit from Mexico against border arms trafficking

MADRID, 1 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The District Court of Massachusetts (United States), has dismissed this Friday a multimillion-dollar lawsuit filed by the Mexican Government and estimated at some 10,000 million euros against the main manufacturers and a US arms distributor for encouraging the violence of Mexican drug traffickers .

The lawsuit, filed in August last year, pointed to manufacturers as prominent as Smith

On the other hand, the magistrate responsible for the case, Dennis Saylor, has ruled that the defendants have their proper permits, and the consequent protection of the Law for the Protection of the Legal Trade in Arms (PLCAA in English).

Saylor has indicated that US federal law "unequivocally" prohibits lawsuits that seek to hold gun manufacturers liable when people use their products for their intended purpose. Although this law contains several limited exceptions, the magistrate has decided not to apply any in this case.

The legal adviser of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, Alejandro Celorio, has advanced in a press conference collected by the Sin Embargo portal that the court's ruling is only the "first round" within the legal procedure promoted by the Mexican Government, which intends to appeal the decision.

"This demand by the Mexican government has received worldwide recognition and has been considered a turning point in the discussion about the responsibility of the arms industry in the experience of violence in Mexico and the region," added the Ministry in a statement.

Violence in Mexico has been unleashed since the mid-2000s. According to official estimates, at least 340,000 people have suffered a violent death in the country since 2006, when the Mexican government deployed the Armed Forces to fight drug cartels. .
