With six votes at five, the board of directors at the University of Tromsø decided to go over from elected to appointed school principal. This has attracted strong reactions among the employees, who were in strong opposition to the change. In a time when universities 'autonomy increasingly deteriorate, it is also unfortunate that another university will receive a form of government where the employees' representation in the board to weaken, and it's principals that will be more loyal to a government that has employed them, than the employees who have selected them.
There is also a step in the direction of a further markedstilpasning of the sector, since many of the external representatives on the universitetsstyrene come from the business sector, and this increases its influence. For many years, for example, the debate about universities to go over to a foretaksmodell, and operated more like businesses, has been one of the sector's blankeste stridsepler. Additional power to the external members of the board may also cause the foretaksmodellen come closer.Turn On the LydErrorAllerede plus customer? It does not that the scheme with the selected principal always works optimally. Tromsø-rector Anne Husebekk, who voted to hire the new principal despite the fact that she herself is chosen, has pointed out that it is not ideal to have a professional manager who does not possess the institution's resources. It is the director's doing, and this is a position that falls away when the principal is employed. A selected principal can come from a particular wing, or the environment among the staff, and hear more on some of them than on others. In the best case, an employee of the principal lead to that the processes at the institution becomes more transparent, and that the deep-seated structures are challenged.
So the climate now is in the sector, it is still important to think about the general and fundamental questions. The requirement of improving efficiency, cost saving and demonstrable usefulness is everywhere, both in the public and private sector. For institutions such as universities, who will stand against the strongest trends of the time and manage the science and knowledge for the future, it is important to be able to withstand the strongest pressure from outside. The university shall have other ideals than what a medium sized Norwegian company. With this week's decision, the board of directors at the University of Tromsø taken a step away from these ideals.Kreftkrise: - Can lead to more die You can submit your article and opinion piece in Dagbladet here
